It can be a minefield out there, and you don’t want to sign into a three-year lease before you’ve even seen the place.
Signing Your First Lease
Make a point of viewing as many apartments in your price range as you can before you sign a lease. Ideally, you should view the apartment in person instead of just looking at pictures before signing any contract.
You may not get the full image of what the apartment looks like from the pictures alone, which can be very deceiving.
When you schedule a viewing with a landlord, ask to view the apartment later in the day—preferably early evening. There’s a particular reason for this. The apartments are right next to each other. When the neighbors are home, you can gauge the noise levels. You may find that the apartment walls are too thin, and you might not be able to handle the noise when all neighbors are home.
Lastly, make sure to read the entire contract agreement. Ask for further clarification if anything in the contract seems vague or unclear. Don’t sign a contract if you don’t understand the clauses in the contract.
